CHI St. Alexius Health is a regional health network with a tertiary hospital in Bismarck, the system also consists of critical access hospitals (CAHs) in Carrington, Dickinson, Devils Lake, Garrison, Turtle Lake, Washburn and Williston and numerous clinics and outpatient services.  CHI St. Alexius Health manages four CAHs in North Dakota - Elgin, Linton, and Wishek, as well as Mobridge Regional Medical Center in Mobridge, S.D. CHI St. Alexius Health offers a comprehensive line of inpatient and outpatient medical services, including: a Level II Trauma Center, primary and specialty physician clinics, home health and hospice services, durable medical equipment services, a fitness and human performance center and ancillary services throughout western and central North Dakota.

Responsibilities

 

The CHI St. Alexius Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the single and most senior physician leader for all acute inpatient, hospital based outpatient and ambulatory based employed physician and APC enterprises located in Bismarck and Mandan, and serves as the medical leader for all St. Alexius Dyads. The CMO provides medical management direction and oversight in order to protect, preserve and improve the health of individuals and communities served.  Provides clinical expertise, consultative services, promotes quality of care and standardization, promotes growth and promotes communication to and among providers and leadership at local, regional and national levels.  Champions and implements strategies and goals for the Physician Enterprise operation in order to achieve CHI, Fargo Division and local people, quality, growth and financial goals.

 

Essential Key Job Responsibilities   

  1. Lead the CHI St. Alexius Hospital employed Hospital, Outpatient and Ambulatory physician and APC practices in Dyad Relationship with the Vice President Physician Enterprise for St. Alexius Hospital.
    1. Collaborates with the Midwest Division Chief Medical Officer and Physician Enterprise Executive to ensure the efficient and effective performance of the CHI St. Alexius Hospital and its employed physicians and APC’s in regional, state, division and national CHI initiatives.
    2. Leads the development of Physician Enterprise Service Lines that include the physician enterprise in Dyad partnership with the St. Alexius Hospital Chief Nursing Executive and the hospital Dyad leadership teams.
    3. Collaborates with the St. Alexius Medical Executive Committee (MEC) in leading the development of the CHI St. Alexius Employed Physician Enterprise including APC’s.
    4. Collaborates and communicates with the St. Alexius MEC to ensure the consistent application of medical staff bylaws, policies and procedures.
    5. Assures compliance with CSH physician enterprise and financial justification processes.
    6. Collaborates with the Midwest Division Physician and APC recruitment teams to assure appropriate staffing for Physicians and APC’s at St. Alexius and St. Alexius Physician Enterprise on an ongoing and prospective manner sufficient to meet the needs of CHI St. Alexius Hospital, the Midwest division and CSH national goals and objectives.
    7. Provides leadership, oversight and direction to the clinical operational performance of the CHI St. Alexius Hospital Physician Enterprise in Bismarck and Mandan markets including but not limited to: budgeting, operations, physician and APC compensation, staffing, quality, safety, and overall effectiveness and efficiency.
  2. Communicates and implements a physician compact to weave together physicians regardless of employment or contracted status through the incorporation of quality, safety, collegiality, and mission-based elements.
  3. Advises medical staff leaders (Chief of Staff, Department Chairs) on matters of physician performance and behavior.
  4. Build strong relationships with physicians and employees of CHI St. Alexius in order to achieve high levels of physician satisfaction, employee, and patient satisfaction.
  5. Lead the CHI St. Alexius Hospital Physician Engagement Program.
  6. Effective Medical Affairs Function to Support Physician Performance Management
    1. The CMO advises and counsels and provides support to the Chief of Staff and Department Chairs in fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of the medical staff.
    2. Ensures that adequate systems and processes are in place for the medical staff to effectively conduct peer review and credentialing activities.
    3. Ensures that adequate systems and processes are in place for the medical staff to facilitate effective and efficient management and performance of the CHI St. Alexius CDI program.
    4. Provides guidance for departments in establishing and monitoring appropriate clinical parameters, including utilization patterns.
    5. Ensure that adequate systems and processes are in place for the medical staff to facilitate effective and efficient management and performance of the CHI St. Alexius Quality, Safety and Patient Satisfaction Management program that includes routine medical staff input, oversight and direction.
    6. Ensure that adequate systems and processes are in place for the medical staff to facilitate effective and efficient management and performance of the CHI St. Alexius electronic health records in collaboration with the medical staff.
    7. Ensure effective functioning of the One Call system in collaboration with the medical staff and as Dyad with the Chief Nurse Executive.
    8. Integrates the efforts of the private medical staff with those of the MBO’s physician structures in the organization.
  7. Lead the CHI St. Alexius Hospital Dyad Team in a Dyad partnership with the St. Alexius Hospital Chief Nurse Executive
  8. Lead the CHI St. Alexius Hospital quality, and safety management programs in a Dyad partnership with the St. Alexius Hospital Chief Nurse Executive.
  9. The CMO will develop, align and mobilize employed physicians and APC’s around successfully achieving clinical, operational, and strategic priorities for the organization.
    1. Collaboratively sets annual quality goals that support system-wide metrics.
    2. Ensures that the delivery system works as a team delivering excellent care. Champions innovative, best practice models and standards of care.
    3. Uses data, rounding and monthly reviews to ensure quality, operational, satisfaction and patient care standards are continually improving - working in partnership with administrative and clinical staff.
    4. Creates environment where information is accessible, transparent and appropriately shared in order for patients to transition from providers to services seamlessly.
  10. Serves as a Community and Organizational Role Model for the Values and Standards of Catholic Health Initiatives.
    1. Conducts reviews as needed to ensure each dyad is fulfilling the CHI Mission, Vision and Values.
    2. Actively participates in community activities and boards that promote CHI Mission, Vision and Values.
  1. Advises and facilitates major physician-physician, physician-patient, physician-staff, and interdepartmental concerns, when escalated beyond the departmental level.
  1. Collaborates with the Midwest Division Chief Medical Officer and Physician Enterprise Executive to ensure efficient and effective performance of CHI St. Alexius Hospital and its employed physicians and APC’s.
  2. Collaborates with the Midwest Division Chief Medical Officer and Physician Enterprise Executive to ensure the efficient and effective performance of the CHI St. Alexius Hospital and its employed physicians and APC’s in regional, state, division and national CHI initiatives.
  3. Annually works with financial leaders to develop and implement an operating budget that support strategic plans and goals.
    1. Works with financial and administrative leaders to monitor and control budget performance.
    2. When necessary takes appropriate actions to correct financial performance.
  4. Engages in talent management activities as needed to attract and retain high quality clinical and non-clinical teams. Models positive work environment for all staff, consistently applies human resource policies and practices, promotes growth and development and may be asked to participate in provider relation issues to help resolve issues that interfere with performance.
  5. Key working relations include: boards, physicians, staff, community government and business leaders, partners, vendors, Midwest Division Office, National Office.  Reporting relationships include:  Dyad Physician Leaders will report to this position with a dotted line reporting from Service Leaders.
  6. Travel may be required to other North Dakota facilities including: Williston, Dickinson, Carrington, and Devils Lake.  Other places:  Fargo Division Office, National Office in Denver.

Qualifications

Required Education (for CHI Leadership Job Levels from Supervisor through President)

Sys/Div/Mkt/Local Vice President – Required  Master’s or Post Graduate Degree

Required Education for Staff Job Levels

Requires M.D. or D.O., Board Certification in an ABMS Board Specialty.  MHA, MBA or MS CPE preferred. 

Required Minimum Experience

5 years’ experience as Senior Leadership Executive preferred

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Physician practice management and leadership experience required.

PREFERRED Education and/or Experience

Designation as a CPE or Fellow of American Associate for Physician Leaders preferred.
